COMPENSATION-RELATED BENEFITS
- BBN Incentive Program BBN offers a short-term cash incentive program to its regular full-time and part-time employees. The target pay-out is up to 10% of an employee’s base salary and varies according to billability goals and BBN/business unit/individual performance. Employees who are responsible for capturing new work can receive an additional business development award which is paid on a quarterly basis.
- 401(k) Savings Plan BBN offers a traditional pre-tax 401(k) Plan and a post-tax Roth 401(k) Plan through Fidelity Investments. Employees are eligible to participate in the 401(k) in their first month of employment. The 401(k) can be used to defer a portion of your salary into a retirement plan on a pre- or post-tax basis through payroll deductions. BBN adds to the employee savings by providing a company match of 100% of the first 4% of employee contributions and 50% of the next 2% of employee contributions. Matching contributions are vested immediately at 100%.
- BBN Retirement Contribution BBN provides an additional retirement contribution to employee 401(k) accounts. The contribution is 5% of an employee’s base salary and is vested 100% immediately.
HEALTH AND WELFARE
- Medical and Dental Insurance BBN shares the cost of comprehensive medical and dental coverage with employees, their spouses or partners, and dependents on a pre-tax basis. Benefits are provided by leading health care providers including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente and Delta Dental. Vision care and prescription programs are included in the medical plans.

- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Kaiser Permanente (for VA, MD, DC employees)
- Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) Employees may elect to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover certain medical and dependent care expenses in a Flexible Spending Account. BBN offers three FSAs, the Dependent Care Spending Account for dependent care expenses ,the Health Care Spending Account, for eligible medical, dental, vision and medication expenses and the Limited Health Spending Account for subscribers to the High Deductible Plan w/ HSA. There is a $5000 maximum for each account.
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP) BBN provides employees and their families with free access to an Employee Assistance Program, a confidential counseling and referral service.
- Wellness/Fitness Programs BBN offers Wellness and Fitness programs on-site at the Cambridge, MA location. Employees can take advantage of health promotion programs, individualized exercise instruction and group exercise classes. Employees at other office locations are eligible for discounts on memberships to local centers.
PAID TIME OFF
- Vacation BBN provides employees with 15 days of paid vacation after two months of service, accrued on a weekly basis in proportion to the time worked during the calendar year. Paid vacation increases to 20 days after five years of service, 25 days after 15 years of service and 30 days after 25 years of service.
- Holidays In 2008, BBN observes the following 10 holidays:
Day Before New Year’s, New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas, Day after Christmas.
LIFE INSURANCE AND INCOME PROTECTION
- Basic Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance BBN provides Basic Life Insurance and AD&D Insurance through the Hartford at 1 times base salary at no cost to the employee. Additional supplemental life and AD&D insurance coverage of up to 5 times base salary may be purchased by the employee.
- Short Term Disability (STD) At no cost to the employee, BBN provides a short term disability plan in the event of an extended absence due to illness or injury, for a maximum period of 26 work weeks in a 12 month period.
- Long Term Disability (LTD) Employees may purchase long term disability coverage at either 66 2/3 % or 50% of monthly pay. This plan protects against loss of income by an employee who becomes totally disabled beyond 26 work weeks due to sickness or injury.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Professional Development Programs Employees are eligible for a minimum of 2 days of training per year. BBN provides in-house professional development programs focusing on Mentoring, Growing Great People Managers, Customer Relationship Training, Principal Investigator Development, Program Management Development, Leadership, individualized coaching, and general professional development. Additional resources include books, articles, audiotapes and videos on professional topics.
- Science Development Program (SDP) Established in 1975, the Science Development Program supports career advancement for technical staff by sponsoring activities aimed at developing and enhancing the staff’s capabilities and facilitating new areas of research. The SDP sponsors a number of technical seminar series, gives financial awards for publications and patents and provides partial financial support for professional activities.
- Tuition Reimbursement BBN reimburses employees 100% up front for the costs of approved, mandatory education tuition, and fees. Textbooks are reimbursed after successful (C or better) completion of course.
- BBN Library The BBN Library is an internal resource available to all BBN employees, providing a wide variety of information and research services including: a physical collection with 15,000 volumes and 300+ journals; desktop delivery of full-text and abstract databases; and an internal repository of company information. The Library staff research business, company, government, patent and technical information.
WORK/LIFE BALANCE
- Flexible Work Environment: To address the challenges of commuting and individual constraints, BBN provides its employees with a flexible work environment. Employees can work with their managers to establish mutually agreed upon work schedules.
