Integrating Simulation Based Training into the Joint Advanced Distributed Learning (JADL) 2012 Integrated Prototype Architecture (IPA)

The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative and the Joint ADL Co-Laboratory support e-learning standards used in commercial, academic, government and military installations world-wide. The SCORM standard that they support defines a comprehensive suite of e-learning capabilities that enables interoperability, accessibility and reusability of Web-based learning content. The Joint ADL Co-Lab is the branch of this organization devoted to our military training requirements as well as to research in the e-learning arena.

A key feature of the architecture developed by the JADL Co-Lab is the inclusion of simulation-based multi-user training in traditional e-learning environments. The BBN approach to integrating simulation-based training into this architecture is based on an open, distributed, standards-based infrastructure. This will allow the JADL IPA training environment to grow and evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of the Department of Defense and other national and international organizations.

Objectives

BBN's objectives in this project are to:

  • Produce an architecture for integrating simulation-based training within the SCORM e-learning environment.
  • Define the interfaces to major components and the format of major data structures within this architecture.
  • Produce and demonstrate a prototype implementation of this architecture.
  • Define and demonstrate a framework for matching the most appropriate training to each trainee, as an individual or as a member of a team.

Interoperability and Integration

The primary areas of this work are Architecture Interoperability and Joint Training Interoperability. Specifically, we are addressing the problems of integrating simulation-based, multi-user training within the JADL IPA architecture based on our experience on the DARWARS a DARPA-funded effort to support simulation based training for individuals and teams in a distributed environment.
